Kamala + Down-Ballot Fundraising + You

The past few months of the presidential election cycle have been a whirlwind. The transition to Kamala Harris from Joe Biden at the top of the Democratic Party ticket shook things up and is ushering in a new, energized Democratic Party base.

With this shift came millions of dollars flowing into not just Kamala’s campaign, but to Democrats up and down the ballot nationwide. Just a few weeks ago, the Harris campaign donated $25 million to support down-ballot Democrats, the largest investment we’ve seen in recent election years. As a down-ballot candidate, you have the opportunity to capitalize on this fundraising momentum too.

The most important way you can capitalize on this momentum is to update your messaging. As Kamala becomes the face of the Democratic Party we have seen a shift in communications and messaging. Below are a few ways you can update your campaign messaging and leverage it for fundraising.

  1. Reverse Coattails – The data has shown, over several election cycles, that increasing turnout for Democrats in local races benefits Democrats at the top of the ticket. This means by investing in local races, Democrats can turnout more supporters for Kamala at the top of the ticket. Framing to donors how investing in your local race will benefit the Democratic Party as a whole this election can drive support (and money) to your campaign. All while building support for all Democrats on the ticket.

  2. Commonalities with the ticket – With the Harris-Walz ticket set, you should consider where you align with the ticket on messaging. Some examples:

    1. Are you an educator? You can update messaging to support electing educators to office, given Walz’s background.

    2. Are you a younger candidate? Update your messaging to discuss the importance of building a bench and electing younger elected officials.

    3. Are you the first woman running to represent this district? Your messaging can focus on why electing women into positions of power is so important.

    4. Are you a candidate of color? You can have your messaging speak to Kamala’s historic nomination and why representation matters at all levels of government.

  3. Campaign Events/Milestones – Is there an upcoming presidential debate? Or a rally the Harris-Walz campaign is hosting in your district? Build fundraising infrastructure around these events, whether it be a fundraising texting campaign or a fundraising event. Utilize these to your advantage to build organic momentum for your campaign.

Now is the time to pivot your messaging and fundraising strategy to maximize on the broader momentum we are seeing to elect Democrats for your campaign.
